A round copper gasket creates a leak-proof seal between the portafilter and the group head of an espresso machine. Copper is chosen for its ability to deform slightly under pressure, filling microscopic gaps without cracking or hardening over repeated heating and cooling cycles. The metal also conducts heat evenly, helping to maintain a stable brewing temperature at the point where hot water meets coffee grounds.

To replace the gasket, the operator first removes the old one, cleans the groove in the group head, then presses the new gasket into place until it sits flush. Once seated, the gasket compresses when the portafilter is locked in, preventing steam and water from escaping around the basket. The seal must be checked periodically; if it becomes flattened or brittle, extraction pressure drops and the espresso loses crema and body.

The gasket is formed from a single ring of copper 2.2 mm thick, with an outer diameter of 22 mm and an inner diameter of 16.5 mm. These dimensions match the groove cut into the group heads of the listed machines, ensuring a precise fit without distortion.
