A hob is the central element of a home kitchen, determining daily cooking comfort and efficiency. A properly chosen hob meets both culinary needs and kitchen aesthetics, as well as energy efficiency requirements. Gas, induction or electric radiant — each technology has its own advantages and specifics to consider before making a purchase. BHS offers hobs for home kitchens across Europe.

Hob technologies

Gas hobs — fast heat response time, visual flame control and the ability to cook even during power outages. Gas hobs are ideal for using professional techniques at home — wok cooking, flambéing and pan frying with intense heat. Induction hobs — the fastest heat transfer, the most efficient energy use and easiest cleaning, as the hob surface itself does not heat up. Requires induction-compatible cookware. Electric radiant hobs — smooth glass-ceramic surface, easy to clean, low purchase cost. Slower heat response time than induction or gas. Combined hobs — a combination of gas and induction burners in a single hob panel, offering both fast heat and precise temperature control. BHS helps choose the right technology.

Size and burner configuration

The standard hob width is 60 cm with 4 burners — the most common option for home kitchens. 75 cm and 90 cm hobs offer more space and 5–6 burners, suitable for larger kitchens and active cooks. 30 cm and 45 cm models are designed for small kitchens or as an additional cooking zone. Burner layout — the standard is 4 burners in a square or 4 burners in a row, but premium models offer asymmetrical layouts with a central wok burner or telescopic grills. ILVE premium models offer various configurations with high aesthetic value and high-power burners. BHS helps choose the size based on the kitchen plan.

Design and integration

Built-in hobs are available in stainless steel, black glass-ceramic or white finish, allowing coordination with the rest of the kitchen equipment. Frame-type installation with a stainless steel edge — visible hob boundary. Frameless installation — the hob surface blends into the worktop almost seamlessly, creating a fully smooth surface impression. Premium ILVE hobs are known for Italian design, high-quality materials and long service life. BHS helps coordinate the hob design with the overall kitchen interior.

Installation and safety

Installing built-in hobs requires a precise cut-out in the worktop material — wood, stone or ceramic. Gas hob installation requires a certified gas specialist and a certified ventilation system connection. Induction and electric hob installation requires a 380V or 230V electrical connection according to the appliance’s power. Safety requirements: child lock, automatic shut-off, overheating protection — standard in premium models.

Frequently asked questions

Gas or induction — which is better for the home? Induction is faster, more energy-efficient and easier to clean. Gas offers instant response, visible flame and cooking without electricity. The choice depends on cooking habits, kitchen configuration and the availability of a gas connection. BHS helps weigh the pros and cons.

How much power is needed for an induction hob? A standard 4-burner induction hob consumes 3,5–7,4 kW. A 60 A circuit breaker is the minimum for higher-power models. Check the home’s electrical capacity before purchasing.
