A flat PTFE gasket creates a pressure-tight seal between the portafilter and the group head of a commercial espresso machine. When the portafilter is locked in place, the gasket compresses slightly, filling microscopic gaps and preventing water from bypassing the coffee puck. Without this seal, pressure drops, extraction weakens and the shot channels unevenly. PTFE is chosen for its heat resistance and non-stick surface, so the gasket does not adhere to the metal parts and can be removed cleanly for regular cleaning.

To fit the gasket, the operator first removes the old seal from the group head or portafilter. The new gasket is placed into the groove, ensuring it lies flat and evenly around the entire circumference. Once seated, the portafilter is reattached and tested with a blank basket to confirm the seal holds pressure. Over time, the gasket will wear and need replacement when shots begin to drip from the sides or pressure readings fall.

The gasket is a single piece of PTFE, 35 mm in outer diameter, 30 mm inner diameter and 2 mm thick. These dimensions match the groove on the group head or portafilter of the listed espresso machines, allowing a precise fit without stretching or bunching. The 2 mm thickness provides enough compression to seal without requiring excessive force to lock the portafilter.

Cleaning is simple: after each service the gasket is wiped with a damp cloth to remove coffee oils and residue. No detergents or abrasives are needed, as PTFE resists staining and does not absorb flavours. Regular inspection for cracks or flattening ensures the seal remains effective.
