A gastronorm container standardises food storage across professional kitchens, allowing ingredients and prepared dishes to move seamlessly between refrigerators, bain-maries, trolleys and worktops. The GN 1/2 size is the most common half-width module, fitting side by side in a single GN 1 space or stacked in pairs beneath a standardised shelf or work surface. Polycarbonate is chosen for its balance of rigidity and lightness: it withstands repeated handling, resists cracking under impact, and does not absorb food odours or stains. The material also tolerates the temperature swings of hot and cold storage without warping or becoming brittle, so the container keeps its shape and seal over years of use.

The operator loads the container with raw or cooked food, slides it into a compatible rack or shelf, and covers it with a matching lid or film. When the kitchen switches from prep to service, the same container can be transferred directly to a heated or chilled display unit without repacking. After use, the container is emptied, washed in a commercial dishwasher, and stacked with others of the same size for compact storage. The 100 mm depth is shallow enough to allow easy access to the contents while still holding a practical volume for sauces, sides or portioned ingredients.

Construction is a single moulded polycarbonate tray with reinforced rims for strength and a smooth interior that minimises food adhesion. The external dimensions of 325 mm by 265 mm match the GN 1/2 footprint exactly, ensuring a snug fit in standardised racks and trolleys. The 6.2 litre capacity is sufficient for a single batch of vegetables, a sauce base or a plated dessert, making it a versatile unit for both prep and service.

Cleaning follows from the material: polycarbonate is dishwasher-safe and does not require seasoning or special detergents. The smooth surface releases food residue easily, reducing scrubbing time. After washing, the container dries quickly and can be stacked immediately, ready for the next use.
