A flat PTFE gasket creates a pressure-tight seal between two metal surfaces in a professional espresso machine. The material resists heat, water and coffee oils without hardening or sticking, so the joint stays leak-proof through repeated heating and cooling cycles. When the portafilter or group head is tightened, the gasket compresses slightly to fill any microscopic gaps, preventing steam or water from escaping under pressure.

To replace the gasket, the operator first removes the old seal, cleans the seating groove with a non-abrasive tool, and positions the new gasket so its flat faces lie evenly against both metal surfaces. Once the portafilter or group head is re-attached and tightened, the machine is ready to pull shots. The gasket's dimensions—25.7 mm outer diameter, 21.2 mm inner diameter and 5 mm thickness—match the groove precisely, so no trimming or stretching is needed.

The gasket is made of pure PTFE, a synthetic fluoropolymer chosen for its chemical inertness and low friction. It does not absorb flavours, swell or degrade when exposed to hot water, steam or coffee residues, so it maintains a consistent seal over time.
