A blind gasket seals the portafilter when no coffee is loaded, allowing the machine to build and hold pressure during back-flushing. The silicone ring sits between the portafilter basket and the group head, blocking water flow so the pump can force cleaning detergent or descaling solution through the internal pathways instead of brewing a shot. This process removes coffee oils and scale that accumulate inside the group head and solenoid valves, maintaining consistent temperature and pressure for espresso extraction.

To use the gasket, the operator removes the standard basket from the portafilter, inserts the blind gasket into the portafilter, and locks the portafilter into the group head. The machine is then run on a cleaning or descaling programme, circulating hot water and detergent through the system. Once the cycle completes, the portafilter is removed, the blind gasket taken out, and the standard basket reinstalled for normal operation.

The gasket is made of silicone, chosen for its heat resistance and flexibility. It withstands repeated exposure to hot water and cleaning chemicals without hardening or cracking, ensuring a reliable seal each time it is used.
