A solenoid valve controls the flow of water or steam in professional coffee machines by opening or closing an electrical circuit. When power is applied, the coil inside the valve generates a magnetic field that lifts a plunger, allowing fluid to pass through one of the three ports. This switching action directs water to the brew group, steam wand or bypass line without manual intervention, ensuring consistent extraction and temperature stability during each cycle.
To use the valve, connect the hose fittings to the corresponding water lines on the coffee machine. The valve is wired into the machine's control circuit, typically between the pump and the boiler or heat exchanger. Once installed, the machine's programme sends a 230 V signal to the valve, activating the coil and shifting the internal plunger. The operator selects the desired function—espresso, steam or hot water—and the valve routes the flow accordingly, remaining open for the duration set by the machine's timer.
The valve is constructed as a hose-type unit, meaning it accepts flexible tubing rather than rigid pipework. It is designed to fit ELEKTRA coffee machines, including the MINI-VERTICALE model, where it replaces the original part without modification. The 230 V rating matches the standard mains supply in British commercial kitchens, allowing the valve to be connected directly to the machine's existing wiring without additional transformers or adapters.
Cleaning involves disconnecting the valve from the power supply and flushing the internal passages with clean water to remove coffee oils and scale. The hose connections should be inspected periodically for leaks or wear, and replaced if the tubing shows signs of cracking or hardening.
