A 3-way solenoid valve controls the flow of hot water and steam in professional espresso machines by switching a single inlet between two outlets. When the machine brews, the valve opens to send pressurised water through the group head; when it steams, the valve redirects the same flow to the steam wand. The switching is electrical, triggered by the machine's control circuit, so the operator does not touch the valve during service.

The sequence is automatic. The barista selects brew or steam on the machine's panel; the control board sends 230 V to the solenoid coil; the coil pulls a plunger inside the valve body, opening one path and closing the other. When the cycle ends, the coil de-energises and a spring returns the plunger, restoring the default position.

Construction is a sealed brass body with stainless-steel internal parts. The coil is encapsulated in epoxy resin for moisture resistance, and the electrical connection is a standardised spade terminal. No user adjustment is provided; the valve is either open or closed.

The 230 V rating matches the mains supply in British commercial kitchens, so the valve connects directly to the machine's internal wiring without a transformer or additional relay. The 50/60 Hz tolerance allows the same part to be used in installations with either frequency.

Cleaning is limited to external wiping with a damp cloth to remove coffee residue. The valve itself is not disassembled; if it fails, it is replaced as a unit.
