A flat gasket forms a tight, heat-resistant seal between two surfaces in a coffee machine. Made of PTFE, it withstands the temperatures and pressures of brewing while preventing leaks of water, steam or coffee oils. The material does not degrade, absorb flavours or stick, so the seal remains consistent over repeated heating and cooling cycles.

The gasket sits between the portafilter and the group head, creating a closed chamber where hot water is forced through the coffee grounds. When the portafilter is locked in place, the gasket compresses slightly to fill any microscopic gaps, ensuring the water flows only through the coffee and not around it. Without a proper seal, pressure drops, extraction weakens and the machine drips or sprays.

To replace the gasket, the portafilter is removed and the old seal is pried out. The new gasket is pressed into the groove on the group head until it lies flat and even. The portafilter is reattached and tightened; the first brew cycle checks for leaks around the seal.

Constructed from PTFE, the gasket is cut to a precise thickness of 1 millimetre, with an outer diameter of 18 millimetres and an inner diameter of 3.5 millimetres. These dimensions match the groove on CREM group heads, allowing a snug fit without stretching or bunching.
