A precision tamper ensures even compression of coffee grounds in the portafilter basket, creating a uniform bed that water passes through at the same rate. Without this consistency, water channels through loose areas, extracting too much from some grounds and too little from others, leading to uneven flavour and weak crema.

The tamper is pressed down firmly and evenly, applying steady pressure until the coffee is compacted to the correct density. The operator then locks the portafilter into the espresso machine, where hot water is forced through the compressed puck under high pressure, extracting the coffee oils and soluble compounds that form the espresso shot.

Constructed to a precise diameter of 58.4 mm, this tamper matches the internal dimensions of standard commercial portafilter baskets, eliminating gaps that would allow water to bypass the coffee. The flat base and smooth sides create a level surface, preventing uneven extraction or grounds from sticking to the sides of the basket.
