An O-ring is a circular seal that compresses between two surfaces to prevent leaks of water, steam or coffee oils. In coffee machines, it sits in a groove around a connection—brew head, water line or steam wand—and deforms under pressure to fill any gap. Silicone is chosen for its resilience at brewing temperatures and its resistance to oils and cleaning agents, so the seal remains flexible and effective over repeated heating and cooling cycles.

To replace the O-ring, the operator first isolates the machine from the water supply and power. The worn seal is removed with a non-metallic tool to avoid scratching the groove. The new O-ring is lightly lubricated with food-grade silicone grease, then stretched over the fitting and seated evenly in the groove. Once the connection is reassembled and tightened, the machine is tested for leaks under normal operating pressure.

The O-ring is made of red silicone, a material that meets food-contact standards and withstands the thermal and chemical stresses of a professional coffee environment.
