An O-ring creates a pressure-tight seal between two metal surfaces in an espresso machine. It sits in a groove, compressed when the parts are bolted together, so that hot water and steam cannot leak past the joint. The material must remain flexible at high temperatures and resist the oils and acids found in coffee.

This O-ring is installed when the machine is stripped for service. The old seal is removed, the groove cleaned, and the new ring pressed into place. Once the mating parts are reassembled and tightened, the seal is tested under operating pressure to confirm no leaks.

The FKM compound is a fluoroelastomer chosen for its heat stability and chemical resistance. It withstands the repeated thermal cycles of an espresso machine without hardening or cracking.
