An O-ring forms a pressure-tight seal between two metal surfaces in professional catering equipment. In espresso machines it sits where the portafilter meets the group head, preventing water from leaking under pressure. In meat mixers it seals the lid or the shaft housing, keeping fat and liquid inside the bowl while the blades turn. EPDM rubber is chosen for its resistance to hot water, steam and food oils, so the seal stays flexible and does not crack over repeated heating and cooling cycles.

To replace the O-ring, the operator first switches off and unplugs the appliance. The portafilter or lid is removed, and the old ring is prised out with a blunt tool. The new O-ring is seated evenly in the groove, ensuring no twist or pinch. The appliance is reassembled, then tested with a short cycle to confirm the seal holds.
