A lower star is the mechanical link between the group head and the portafilter in a traditional espresso machine. It transmits the rotary motion from the lever or motor to the portafilter, locking it securely into the group head so that pressurised water can flow through the coffee puck without leaking. The star shape ensures even distribution of force around the portafilter ears, preventing distortion and maintaining a consistent seal during extraction.
To use the lower star, the operator first removes the existing component by unscrewing it from the group head spindle. The new lower star is then threaded onto the spindle until it sits flush against the group head. No tools are required beyond the initial removal of the old part. Once fitted, the portafilter can be inserted and rotated into place as usual, with the lower star providing the necessary grip and alignment.
This component is manufactured to match the original specifications of San Marco espresso machines. It fits the models listed in the compatibility chart without modification, ensuring correct operation and pressure retention during brewing.
Cleaning is limited to routine removal of coffee residue. The lower star should be wiped with a damp cloth after each service period to prevent build-up of oils and grounds that could affect the seal. No disassembly is needed for cleaning, and the part requires no lubrication or adjustment once installed.
