A lip seal creates a tight, flexible barrier where the brew group of an espresso machine meets the boiler or water circuit. It presses against the moving metal surfaces, preventing water or steam from leaking past the joint while the machine builds pressure for extraction. Without this seal, the pump would struggle to reach the 9–15 bar needed for espresso, and the portafilter would drip or spray instead of delivering a steady stream.
The operator removes the old seal by prising it out of its groove with a small tool, cleans the seat, and presses the new seal into place until it sits evenly around the circumference. No adhesive is used; the seal is held by its own tension and the pressure of the metal parts when the machine is reassembled. Once fitted, it remains stationary while the brew group cycles, maintaining the seal through hundreds of extractions.
This seal is a single ring of synthetic rubber, dimensioned to fit the specified groove. The material is chosen for resilience at the temperatures and pressures of espresso brewing, and for resistance to the oils and acids in coffee. It does not harden or crack under repeated heating and cooling, so it keeps its shape and sealing ability over time.
The 23 mm outer diameter, 15 mm inner diameter and 6 mm thickness match the groove found on the brew groups of the listed models. These dimensions ensure the seal sits flush with the metal parts, neither compressed too tightly nor left loose enough to shift during operation.
Cleaning is limited to wiping the seal with a damp cloth after each use to remove coffee residue. No solvents or abrasives should be used, as they can damage the rubber and shorten its life.
This article is a direct replacement part for the brew groups of the following brands and models: Gaggia Household espresso and super-automatic machines, Krups Palatino 905, Pavoni EIL and EIV, and Saeco Vending espresso, super-automatic and vending machines.
In the catalogue, this seal is listed under Coffee Machine Parts, Brew Group Components.
