Electric Hobs for Ships

Electric hobs for ships are professional marine-class electric cooking surfaces with individual heating elements or plates, designed for use on cargo ships, passenger ferries and other sea vessels with routes through ports. The electric hob provides cooking zones with heating elements matching pan sizes, pot fixators to ensure stability during rocking, and an AISI 316 stainless steel body for long-lasting corrosion resistance in salt-air environments. Electric hobs for ships are available as freestanding or built-in (drop-in) appliances that integrate into the ship’s galley block.

BHS specialists help select the most suitable marine hob based on the number and power of heating elements. Also explore induction cooktop surfaces for ships, electric griddle surfaces for ships and electric stove with oven for ships.

Electric hobs for ships are versatile cooking and food preparation appliances that provide individual control of heating elements for each cooking task in a ship’s galley. Unlike solid-top griddle surfaces, electric hobs with separate elements allow each zone to be controlled independently, saving energy in unused zones.

Types of electric hobs for ships

Two-heating-element hobs are compact, with 2 independent circular or square heating elements; suitable for small ships with limited galley space. Four-element hobs are the standard HoReCa format with 4 independent heating zones; they provide sufficient cooking capacity for medium-sized ships. Hobs with variable-power zones combine a larger (3–4 kW) and a smaller (1,5–2 kW) element on a single surface; they optimise energy consumption and cooking efficiency. Drop-in marine hobs are built-in models for integration into a marine galley’s permanent installation. Also explore induction cooktop surfaces for ships.

Marine technical parameters

Marine versions of electric hobs have special parameters for stable operation in sea conditions. Pot fixators are a metal rod or grate system on each heating zone that prevents pots from shifting during rocking; a mandatory safety feature for marine hobs. Electrical power is 1,5–4 kW per element; total power is 6–12 kW depending on the configuration. Heating element type is stainless steel enclosed coils (solid plate) or glass-ceramic; for marine use, solid plate is more durable. AISI 316 construction provides reinforced corrosion protection, suitable for long-term use in sea conditions. Voltage options are 220V/50Hz or 110V/60Hz. Electric vs induction hobs for ships

When choosing between electric and induction hobs for a ship, several factors should be considered. Electric solid-plate hobs are compatible with all pots and pans, including aluminium; they are more robust against mechanical damage; and they have a lower purchase price. Induction surfaces provide faster heating and better energy efficiency; they require induction-compatible cookware; and they are more sensitive to mechanical damage from metal scratching. In marine conditions, electric solid-plate hobs are more resistant to moisture and physical damage; induction is more energy-efficient for ships with limited generator capacity. HoReCa use scenarios

Cargo ship with crew — a four-element electric hob allows the ship’s chef to simultaneously prepare soup, side dishes, meat and sauce in parallel for the crew’s daily meals. Passenger ferry with a small à la carte service — an electric hob as the main cooking appliance in a small culinary zone for passenger service. Yacht with professional culinary service — a quality marine hob in the premium living-area yacht galley.

Frequently asked questions

Are electric hobs compatible with all pots? Yes — electric solid-plate hobs are compatible with all pots; induction surfaces only work with magnetic cookware. Contact BHS.

How many heating elements are needed for a ship’s galley? For small ships, 2 elements are sufficient; for a medium-sized ship’s galley, 4 are needed.
