The rinse aid lowers the surface tension of the water, so it sheets off crockery and glassware instead of forming droplets that dry into spots. The process is entirely mechanical, requiring no electricity or moving parts beyond the valve itself.

The operator fills the reservoir with rinse aid, then the dispenser works automatically each time the dishwasher runs a rinse cycle. Water pressure from the machine's supply line pushes against a diaphragm inside the dispenser, opening the valve for a set interval. Cleaning involves emptying and rinsing the reservoir periodically to prevent residue build-up. The hydraulic valve requires no maintenance beyond ensuring the water supply is free of debris that could block the diaphragm.
