A flat carbo gasket creates the seal between the portafilter and the group head of a professional espresso machine. The gasket sits in a groove around the group head and presses against the rim of the portafilter basket when the handle is locked. This seal prevents pressurised water from leaking around the edges of the basket, forcing it instead through the coffee puck to extract the espresso. Without a tight seal, water bypasses the coffee, pressure drops and the shot runs weak or uneven.

To replace the gasket, the operator first removes the old seal from the group-head groove. The new flat carbo gasket is then pressed into the groove until it sits evenly around the entire circumference. Once seated, the portafilter is reattached and locked to test the seal. A correctly fitted gasket feels firm when the portafilter is turned into place and does not allow water to escape around the basket during extraction.

The gasket is made of carbo material, a dense synthetic compound chosen for its resistance to heat, pressure and the oils present in coffee. Its flat profile matches the groove design of the listed espresso machines, ensuring a consistent seal across the entire contact surface.
