A filter locking spring holds the portafilter firmly against the group head of an espresso machine. The spring is a coiled stainless-steel wire that fits into a groove on the portafilter spout. When the portafilter is locked into the group, the spring compresses and presses the portafilter rim against the rubber gasket. This creates a tight seal that stops water leaking around the edges and keeps the brewing pressure steady. Without the spring, the portafilter can rock or lift, letting water escape and reducing the pressure that extracts the coffee.
To use the spring, slide it onto the portafilter spout until it sits in the groove. Push the portafilter into the group head and turn it to the locked position. The spring will compress and the portafilter will feel snug. After brewing, turn the portafilter back to release it; the spring will expand and help pop the portafilter free.
The spring is made of stainless steel wire with a diameter of 1.00 mm. Stainless steel resists corrosion from water and coffee oils, so the spring keeps its tension over time.
This spring fits portafilters on espresso machines from ASTORIA CMA, AZKOYEN, BEZZERA, BRASILIA, BRUGNETTI-AURORA, CARIMALI, CASADIO, CIMBALI, CONTI, ELEKTRA, EXPOBAR, FAEMA, FIORENZATO C.S., FUTURMAT-ARIETE, GAGGIA, GRIMAC, ISOMAC, ITALCREM, MAIRALI, MARCFI-ANCAS, MARZOCCO, NUOVA SIMONELLI, PAVONI, PROMAC, RANCILIO, RENEKA, SAB ITALIA, SAN MARCO, SANREMO, SCALA, SPAZIALE, VIBIEMME, VICTORIA ARDUINO and WEGA.
Cleaning is straightforward: remove the spring from the portafilter and wash it in warm water with a mild detergent. Dry it before replacing it to prevent water spots and maintain tension.
