A single-cup filter basket holds the precise dose of ground coffee that becomes one shot of espresso. The perforated base allows hot, pressurised water to pass through the compacted coffee bed, extracting flavour and crema without letting the grounds escape into the cup.

The operator places the filter in the portafilter, fills it with the measured dose of coffee, tamps the grounds evenly, locks the portafilter into the group head and starts the brew cycle. Water at around nine bars of pressure is forced through the coffee, dissolving soluble compounds and emulsifying oils into the characteristic golden crema that tops a well-pulled espresso.

This filter is pressed from stainless steel, a material that resists corrosion, withstands repeated thermal cycling and does not impart any taste to the coffee. The basket's rim is rolled for strength and to prevent sharp edges.

The diameter of 70 mm and the depth of 24.5 mm determine the volume of coffee the basket can hold. A 7 g dose fills the space without over-packing, leaving room for the coffee to expand slightly during extraction and for the water to flow evenly through the puck.

Cleaning is straightforward: after each use the spent puck is knocked out, the basket is rinsed under hot water and wiped with a soft cloth. Periodic soaking in a mild detergent removes coffee oils that can turn rancid and affect flavour.
