A filter holder gasket creates the seal between the portafilter basket and the group head of an espresso machine. Without this seal, pressurised hot water would leak around the edges instead of being forced through the coffee puck, resulting in weak, uneven extraction. The gasket sits in a groove on the underside of the portafilter and compresses against the group head when the portafilter is locked in place, maintaining consistent pressure throughout the brew cycle.
To use the gasket, the operator first removes the old, worn seal from the portafilter. The new gasket is pressed into the circular groove, ensuring it lies flat and evenly around the entire circumference. Once seated, the portafilter is reattached to the machine and tested for leaks by running a short flush cycle. If water sprays from the sides, the gasket may not be seated correctly or may be damaged.
The gasket is a single moulded ring of food-safe elastomer, sized to match the portafilter's outer diameter and thickness. Its dimensions—71 mm outer diameter, 56 mm inner diameter and 9 mm cross-section—determine the fit on the portafilter and the compression against the group head. A correctly sized gasket ensures the portafilter locks at the proper angle and maintains the pressure needed for espresso extraction.
Cleaning is straightforward: after each service, the portafilter and gasket are rinsed under hot water to remove coffee oils and grounds. Periodically, the gasket is inspected for cracks, hardening or deformation, which indicate it needs replacement. No additional maintenance is required beyond regular replacement as part of routine machine upkeep.
This LF gasket is a direct replacement for the original seals on specified models of Casadio, Cimbali, Nuova Simonelli and Victoria Arduino espresso machines. It is listed under spare parts for commercial coffee equipment.
