A filter holder gasket creates the seal between the portafilter and the group head of an espresso machine. It sits in a groove around the rim of the filter holder, pressing against the metal surface of the group head when the portafilter is locked in place. The seal keeps pressurised hot water from leaking out during extraction, so the water is forced through the coffee puck at the correct pressure and flow rate. Without a tight seal, water escapes around the edges, the pressure drops, and the espresso under-extracts, producing weak or sour coffee.
To replace the gasket, the operator first removes the old one, usually with a small tool or by prying it out with a fingertip. The new gasket is pressed into the groove until it sits evenly all the way round. The portafilter is then locked into the group head and a test extraction run to check for leaks. If water still escapes, the gasket may need to be seated more firmly or the groove cleaned of old coffee residue.
The gasket is made of food-safe synthetic rubber, chosen for its resilience and resistance to heat and oils. Over time, the rubber hardens and loses its elasticity, so the seal weakens and must be replaced. The dimensions of 72.5 mm outer diameter, 57 mm inner diameter and 8 mm thickness match the groove in the filter holders of the listed Brasilia models.
This gasket fits Brasilia coffee machines in the 100, 105, 205, 210, CADETTA, CENTURY, CENTURY RESTYLING, CLASSICA, DE-CURTIS, EXCELSIOR, FIRENZE, GRADISCA, MINICLASSIC, PORTOFINO and PORTOFINO-AL ranges. It is a direct replacement part for the original gasket supplied with those machines.
In the catalogue, the gasket is listed under spare parts for espresso equipment, in the section for seals and gaskets.
