Water enters the cartridge under mains pressure and passes through a layered filter medium. The outer layer traps larger sediment, while an activated-carbon core adsorbs dissolved chlorine and organic compounds that cause unpleasant tastes and smells. A final precoat layer captures particles as small as five microns, including potential health contaminants such as asbestos fibres and protozoan cysts. The entire process happens without chemicals, electricity or moving parts, relying solely on the pressure of the incoming water to drive filtration.

To install, the operator shuts off the water supply, depressurises the existing system, unscrews the old cartridge and screws in the new 4C unit until it seats firmly. The system is then repressurised and flushed for several minutes to remove any loose carbon fines. During operation the cartridge requires no adjustment; it continues filtering until the rated 22710 litre capacity is reached, at which point the flow rate will gradually drop, signalling that replacement is due.

The cartridge body is a rigid plastic cylinder 79 mm in diameter and 375 mm tall, with threaded inlet and outlet ports that match Cornelius and Everpure head assemblies. Internal components are sealed within the housing, so the operator never touches the filter medium during installation or removal, reducing the risk of contamination.

Controls are limited to the shut-off valve on the incoming water line; once the valve is opened, the cartridge operates automatically within the specified pressure range of 0.7 to 8.5 bar and temperature range of 2 to 38 °C.

The 22710 litre capacity means the cartridge will process approximately that volume of water before replacement is needed, giving a predictable service interval based on daily usage. The 79 mm diameter and 375 mm height determine the space required inside the filtration housing or under-counter cupboard. Cleaning is limited to the external surfaces of the cartridge body; the sealed design prevents access to the internal filter medium.
