A contactor is an electrically controlled switch that closes and opens high-power circuits without manual operation. In espresso machines, it connects the boiler heating element and the pump motor to the mains supply when the machine calls for heat or water pressure. The coil inside the contactor draws a low current from the control circuit; when energised, it pulls the heavy-duty contacts together, allowing the full load to flow. When the thermostat or pressure switch opens, the coil de-energises, the contacts spring apart and the boiler or pump stops instantly. This method isolates the delicate control electronics from the high-current side, preventing arcing and prolonging the life of both the machine and the switch itself.

To replace the contactor, the machine is first unplugged and the side or rear panel removed. The old unit is unclipped or unscrewed from its DIN rail or mounting plate, the spade or screw terminals are disconnected in order, and the new contactor is fitted in the same orientation. Wires are reattached to the matching terminals, ensuring the coil and power contacts correspond to the original wiring diagram. The panel is refitted, the machine is powered on, and the boiler and pump cycles are tested to confirm the new contactor engages and disengages at the correct set points.

The LF Allen-Bradley K09 is a four-pole contactor rated for 20 A at 400 V, matching the supply voltage and current draw of commercial espresso boilers and pumps. Its compact footprint fits the standardised mounting spaces inside the listed models, and the spade or screw terminals accept the existing wiring harness without modification.

The contactor is a direct replacement for the original Allen-Bradley K-series units used in Casadio Dieci, Undici and Venti; Cimbali M100, M24, M34 and M39-TE; Faema E71, Emblema, Emblema Restyling A and S, Teorema, Teorema A and S; Finox MM and LC series; and Univerbar Logos, Omega and Sincro models.
