A nipple with an O-ring creates a leak-proof joint between two fluid-carrying pipes or fittings inside coffee machines. The nipple itself is a short metal tube threaded at both ends; the O-ring sits in a groove around its middle. When the nipple is screwed into matching female threads, the O-ring is compressed between the metal faces, sealing the connection against water, steam or coffee oils under pressure.

To install, the operator first ensures the mating surfaces are clean and free of old sealant. The O-ring is placed into its groove on the nipple. The nipple is then threaded into the first fitting by hand until finger-tight. A spanner is used to turn the nipple a further quarter to half turn, compressing the O-ring evenly without over-tightening. The second pipe or fitting is screwed onto the opposite end in the same way. Once both ends are secure, the system can be pressurised and checked for leaks.

The O-ring material is chosen to withstand the temperatures and chemicals found in coffee equipment, maintaining flexibility and seal integrity over repeated heating and cooling cycles. Regular inspection of the O-ring for cracks, swelling or flattening is part of routine maintenance; replacement is straightforward and restores the original seal performance.
