A flat gasket forms a pressure-tight seal between the group head and the portafilter in a professional espresso machine. Without it, hot water would leak past the basket instead of being forced through the coffee grounds at the correct pressure. The gasket is compressed when the portafilter is locked in place, filling any microscopic gaps and preventing steam or water from escaping. Over time, the rubber hardens and loses its elasticity, so the seal weakens and extraction becomes uneven. Replacing the gasket restores the original pressure and ensures consistent espresso quality.
The operator removes the old gasket with a flat tool, cleans the groove in the group head, and presses the new gasket into place until it sits evenly all round. No adhesive is needed; the shape of the groove holds it secure. Once fitted, the portafilter should lock with a firm, even resistance and release cleanly when turned.
This gasket is made of food-safe rubber formulated to withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles. Its dimensions—10.2 mm and 13.4 mm diameters with a 2 mm thickness—match the standardised groove found on SCHAERER espresso machines. The copper designation indicates the colour coding used by the manufacturer to identify the size family.
Fits SCHAERER professional coffee machines requiring a flat gasket of this profile.
