GN gastro containers made of polypropylene (PP) are an economical and lightweight alternative to stainless steel GN containers for cold product storage, preparation and transport in professional kitchens, restaurants, catering companies and HoReCa establishments across Europe. Polypropylene GN containers are compatible with all standard GN bain-maries, shelving and thermal box systems, but unlike stainless steel, they are not intended for hot food preparation at high temperatures. BHS offers polypropylene GN containers as part of the GN pans and containers range.
Polypropylene GN containers are available in all standard GN formats with depths of 65–200 mm and in various colours for HACCP coding. BHS helps choose the appropriate set. Also see stainless steel GN containers and GN lids.
Polypropylene GN containers are standard equipment in kitchens where a large number of GN containers is needed without significant initial material investments. In preparation kitchens, where products are sorted, marinated and stored cold, polypropylene containers are an economical and practical solution.
Features of polypropylene GN containers
Polypropylene is a food-grade plastic with several advantages: lightweight — PP containers are 3–5 times lighter than steel equivalents, making handling and transport easier; economical price — significantly lower costs than steel and porcelain, allowing the purchase of a larger quantity; colour coding — PP containers are available in many colours for the HACCP colour coding system (green — vegetables, red — meat, yellow — poultry, etc.); transparency — some PP containers are transparent or partially transparent, allowing the contents to be seen from the side. Temperature limitation: PP containers withstand from −20°C to +100°C, but are not suitable for convection ovens or high-temperature baking ovens.
HACCP colour coding with PP containers
One of the main advantages of polypropylene GN containers is colour coding in the HACCP system. The international standard HACCP colour code: red — raw meat; yellow — raw poultry; blue — raw fish; green — vegetables and fruit; white — prepared products and accessories; brown — other products. Colour coding prevents cross-contamination between product categories. PP containers allow this system to be implemented at low cost, as a separate set of containers is purchased for each colour. BHS advises on the implementation of the HACCP colour coding system.
When and where to use PP GN containers
PP GN containers are ideal for cold storage and preparation — cleaning vegetables, marinating meat, thawing frozen products or storing products in the refrigerator. In large kitchens where many containers are needed simultaneously, PP containers allow the purchase of a larger quantity for the same investment compared to steel. In catering transport, PP GN containers in thermal boxes are ideal — lightweight containers do not increase the total weight of the thermal box and make staff work easier. In a school canteen preparation kitchen, the PP GN system allows the implementation of HACCP colour coding at an economical price and makes it easy to train staff.
HoReCa usage scenarios
In a restaurant preparation kitchen, a PP GN set with colour coding means that every chef knows: red container — meat, green — vegetables. The system is visible, simple and prevents contamination. In a catering company, PP GN containers in thermal boxes hold cold salads or dessert components — lightweight containers make transport easier. In a canteen, PP GN containers store products during preparation — thawing, marinating, sorting. Also see stainless steel GN containers.
Frequently asked questions
Are PP GN containers suitable for dishwashers? Yes — food-grade polypropylene withstands standard dishwasher temperatures (60–85°C). Avoid intensive programmes with temperatures above 90°C, which can deform PP containers and shorten their service life.
Can PP GN containers be used in bain-maries? Only in cold or neutral bain-marie systems. The heat from a hot bain-marie can deform PP containers — stainless steel or porcelain GN containers are required for this application.
