Pot lids are indispensable kitchen accessories that ensure heat retention, steam control and faster cooking — with a lid, water or soup reaches boiling temperature more quickly, food does not overcook and sautéed dishes retain moisture in restaurants, canteens, hotels and HoReCa businesses across Europe. BHS offers pot lids as part of the Pots and kitchen accessories range — all standard diameters are available in stainless steel and glass.
Pot lids in stainless steel and glass are available in various diameters (14–40 cm), with or without a steam vent. BHS helps find a precisely matching lid by pot diameter. Also see LUX Pot with Lid, Pot without Lid and Pan Lids.
A pot lid is a simple but very important accessory for every pot in a professional kitchen — with a lid, food cooks more efficiently and quickly, energy consumption is reduced and the flavour of the dish improves as moisture and aromas are retained inside the pot. BHS supplies pot lids to HoReCa businesses.
Types and materials of pot lids
Stainless steel lids are the most durable and suitable for intensive commercial use — impact-resistant, dishwasher-safe, resistant to high temperatures and disinfectant chemicals. Disadvantage: the food cannot be seen without lifting the lid. Glass lids allow the cooking process to be observed from above and the cooking intensity to be controlled without lifting the lid — convenient but more sensitive to mechanical impacts. Both types are available in sizes with a steam vent that prevents overcooking by allowing steam to escape in a controlled manner. Universal lids with silicone edges fit different pot diameters thanks to the elastic silicone edge, but are not as precise as standard lids tailored to size.
Compatibility and size selection
A pot lid must match the inner diameter of the pot exactly — a lid that is too small will fall into the pot, one that is too large will sit unevenly and will not provide a hermetic seal. Standard diameters: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 36 and 40 cm. The inner diameter of the pot is measured at the surface edge inside. Important: the pot lid must correspond to the volume of the pot — a larger pot lid is heavier and has a larger diameter, which will not hold correctly on a smaller pot, creating a safety risk during hot cooking.
HACCP and cleaning
Stainless steel pot lids meet HACCP requirements — the surface is AISI 304 steel, which is safe for food contact. Glass lids meet food contact glass standards. Steam condensate on the inside of the lid may contain food residues and create conditions for bacterial growth — regular cleaning after each shift is a mandatory HACCP requirement. Stainless steel lids are dishwasher-safe; glass lids should be handled with care. The handle and connection should be checked regularly for stability — a loose handle can create a safety risk when the lid is hot and heavy.
HoReCa usage scenarios
In a restaurant, a lid for sautéed meat or braised dishes ensures that optimal steam pressure is maintained inside the pot, which softens the meat more quickly and efficiently. In a canteen, a lid for a large-capacity pot reduces energy consumption by 15–25% and prevents steam from accumulating in the room, improving working conditions. In a café, a lid for a water-heating pot for tea and coffee reduces the time and facilitates the process throughout the shift. Also see Pot without Lid, to which a lid can be added separately.
Frequently asked questions
How to measure the pot diameter for lid selection? Measure the inner diameter of the pot directly at the top edge with a measuring tape. The result determines the required lid diameter. If between sizes — choose the next larger standard diameter. BHS can advise on precise compatibility.
Are glass lids dishwasher-safe? Most professional glass pot lids are dishwasher-safe, but it is not recommended to mix hot water with cold immediately after the machine cycle. BHS can provide specific model instructions.
