GN containers with a Teflon coating are a special version of GN containers with a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or Teflon non-stick coating, which significantly eases the frying, heating and removal of food from the container without burning or food sticking to the sides — they are an advantage in restaurant combi ovens, convection ovens and catering kitchens across Europe. BHS offers Teflon GN containers as part of its GN Pans and Containers range across Europe.
Teflon-coated GN containers are available in all standard GN formats, the most common being GN 1/1 and GN 1/2 with 40–65 mm depth for frying. BHS helps choose the right model. Also see standard GN containers and GN containers with enamel coating.
Teflon GN containers are especially valuable in intensive frying and heating processes where burning and sticking are major problems — meat with marinades, grilled cheese, pastry products and glazed items are fried and removed from the Teflon container with minimal risk of burning. BHS supplies these containers to HoReCa businesses.
Non-stick coating: PTFE coating prevents food from sticking to the container surface even at high temperatures and without oil. Easy cleaning: Teflon GN containers are significantly easier to wash than standard stainless steel — even baked-on food comes off with a soft sponge and warm water. Product integrity: products (such as lasagne, gratinated vegetables, cakes) are removed whole, without burning or tearing. Reduced oil consumption: with a Teflon coating, minimal oil or none at all is often sufficient — this reduces calorie content and costs. Longer service life: a properly maintained Teflon coating retains its non-stick properties for 2–5 years of intensive use.
The Teflon coating is not indestructible — mechanical cleaning with abrasive materials (metal scourers, iron scrubbing tools) damages the coating and reduces the non-stick effect. Avoid metal spatulas and knives — use silicone or nylon tools. Temperatures above 260°C can damage the coating — it is important to monitor the convection oven temperature. Containers with damaged coating must be replaced — torn Teflon is not safe for food processing. BHS advises on Teflon container care and replacement intervals.
PTFE (Teflon) coating is an approved food contact material that does not impart taste or odour. However, it is important to ensure that the coating is not torn or worn — mechanically damaged Teflon can get into food. Regular visual inspection is mandatory. Containers with chipped or cracked coating must be replaced immediately. Washing is preferably done by hand (or in a dishwasher on a gentle cycle) — mechanical washing with abrasive materials shortens the coating’s service life.
In a restaurant with a lasagne or moussaka menu, a Teflon GN 1/2 pan (65 mm deep) bakes portions daily, which are removed whole without tearing — this would not be possible in a standard pan without a large amount of oil. In a pastry kitchen, a Teflon GN 1/1 shallow pan (20–40 mm deep) bakes sponge cake or vegetable quiche, which comes out perfectly without sticking. In a canteen, gratinated vegetables or broccoli with cheese are served directly from the Teflon GN container — the appearance remains neat. Also see standard GN containers.
Are Teflon GN containers dishwasher-safe? Most manufacturers state that they are safe on a gentle cycle with non-abrasive detergents. However, intensive washing accelerates coating wear — hand washing is recommended. BHS can provide specific care instructions for models.
When should a Teflon GN container be replaced? When the coating is visibly torn, chipped or has greyish spots in places — this means the PTFE is damaged and the container must no longer be used for food. Typically, a Teflon coating lasts 2–5 years depending on usage intensity and care.
