The GN standard size system ensures universal compatibility between different materials and manufacturers — rigid polypropylene GN containers fit precisely into the same stationary racks, heating equipment and transport containers as steel and polycarbonate. Polypropylene material combines lightness, food safety and dishwasher durability at an attractive price. BHS offers GN polypropylene containers to HoReCa businesses across Europe.

Properties of rigid polypropylene for GN containers

Rigid polypropylene (rigid PP) is a thermoplastic with high heat resistance and good mechanical properties. In the context of GN containers, this means — dishwasher-safe up to 85°C (if specified in the manufacturer’s specifications); no absorption of colours and aromas — PP is a non-porous material that does not absorb flavours or colourants from food; food safety — PP is certified for food contact in accordance with European regulations; lightness — PP GN containers are significantly lighter than steel, making transport and daily use easier; temperature range — typically from -40°C (freezing) to +100°C (hot food); compared to polycarbonate — PP is less impact-resistant but cheaper and more suitable for single-use or less intensive handling. BHS helps choose GN polypropylene containers based on the required application.

GN standards and sizes

The GN (Gastronorm) system is the standard for professional kitchen containers. GN 1/1 (530×325 mm) — full pan, standard baking tray size. GN 1/2 (325×265 mm) — half of a GN 1/1 in width. GN 1/3 (325×176 mm) — one-third, ideal for salad bar display. GN 1/4 (265×162 mm) — one-quarter, convenient for storing small products. GN 1/6 (176×162 mm) — one-sixth, compact. GN 2/3 (354×325 mm) — two-thirds. Depth: 20 mm (shallow), 40 mm, 65 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm (deep). Greater depth allows storing more product in one container. BHS offers PP GN containers in various size and depth combinations.

Hygiene and HACCP requirements

GN polypropylene containers in a professional kitchen are used within strict HACCP protocol guidelines. Dishwasher — PP containers typically withstand dishwasher cycles up to 85°C; check the manufacturer’s maximum temperature before use in a dishwasher. Colour coding — in professional kitchens, coloured PP GN containers are used to separate allergens: for example, blue for seafood, red for raw meat, green for vegetables. Containers must be regularly checked for integrity — cracks or scratches can become bacteria hideouts. Storage — clean, dry, on a shelf, not on the floor. BHS helps choose a colour coding system for HACCP compliant product separation.

HoReCa usage scenarios

In a buffet restaurant, GN polypropylene containers are used in cold buffet racks — PP material maintains cold well and is hygienic. GN 1/3 and 1/6 sizes are ideal for displaying various salads and cold side dishes in one row. In canteens and schools for food preparation and storage in freezers — PP containers are suitable for freezing and easy cleaning in a dishwasher in large-scale conditions. In catering for food delivery at events — PP GN containers packed in transport containers are lighter than steel, reducing transport load. In hospital kitchens for coded meals — coloured PP containers provide visual separation between food categories in accordance with HACCP requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between polypropylene and polycarbonate GN containers? Polycarbonate (PC) is harder, more impact-resistant and transparent — allowing content visibility through the side wall. PP is cheaper, less impact-resistant but with better heat resistance and BPA-free. PC is usually chosen when content visibility is needed; PP — when cost or allergen separation coding is a priority. Also explore polycarbonate GN containers.

Can PP GN containers be used in an oven? No — polypropylene GN containers are not suitable for oven use. They are designed for cold storage, freezing, preparation and buffet serving. For hot food storage and oven use, stainless steel GN containers are required.
