GN containers with handles are the standard stainless steel GN container version with added side handles, which significantly ease the safe handling, moving and removal of hot containers from a convection oven, bain-marie or combi oven in professional kitchens, restaurants, canteens, catering and HoReCa businesses. Handles made of stainless steel provide a firm grip even with kitchen gloves and prevent accidental dropping of hot containers. BHS offers these containers as part of its GN Pans and Containers range.
GN containers with handles are available in all standard GN formats, the most common being GN 1/1, GN 1/2 and GN 1/3 with depths of 65–150 mm. BHS helps choose the right GN set. Also check out standard GN containers without handles and GN lids.
GN containers with handles are a small but important improvement over standard GN containers — the handles ensure a safer grip and easier handling of heavy or hot container contents. In large kitchens, where dozens of hot containers are moved daily, handles reduce the risk of burns and make work easier. BHS supplies HoReCa businesses.
Advantages of GN containers with handles
Safe handling with gloves: a standard GN container with a smooth flat edge is difficult to grip with thick oven gloves; handles provide a firm grip even with soft protective gloves. Ergonomics in intensive work: for a chef who moves 50–100 GN containers a day, handles reduce muscle strain and the risk of burns. Easier catering transport: GN containers with handles placed in thermal boxes are easier to lift even in tight spaces. Visual identification: handles can differ in colour or material, making it easier to sort containers by food categories. Stable placement on the table: some handles also serve as a stand, allowing containers to be placed on a narrower surface.
When handles are especially important
In fast-service restaurants and catering businesses, where the pace is high, handles reduce the risk of burns when handling hot containers. In hotel breakfast buffets, staff who frequently refill and empty GN containers work more safely and efficiently with handles. In school canteens, where GN containers are moved by non-professional staff, handles raise the safety standard. When using a convection oven, handles make it easier to remove hot containers from the oven — standard GN containers without handles require special tools or thick gloves.
Materials and HACCP
GN containers with handles are made from AISI 304 stainless steel — the container body and handles made from the same material ensure HACCP compliance and easier cleaning. Handles are welded or integrated into the design, not screwed on — this prevents bacteria buildup at connection points and makes cleaning significantly easier. Washing containers in a dishwasher is a standard procedure; handles do not complicate cleaning as there are no additional gaps. BHS advises on GN container hygiene standards and proper maintenance.
HoReCa usage scenarios
In banquet catering, GN 1/1 containers with handles (150 mm deep) hold large portions of soup or stew — two people can carry them by the handles, safely and without spilling. In hotel breakfast buffets, staff use GN 1/3 containers with handles to move fresh products from the kitchen to the buffet table quickly and safely. In convection ovens, hot GN 1/1 containers (100 mm deep) with roasted pork are removed using special handles — without handles, large oven gloves would be required. Frequently asked questions
Do handles affect the container’s compatibility with a bain-marie? Handles are usually placed on the outer side edges of the container so as not to interfere with inserting the container into a standard GN bain-marie slot. However, for some narrower bain-marie models, handles may cause issues — it is advisable to check compatibility.
Do handles withstand convection oven temperatures? Stainless steel handles withstand temperatures up to 300°C and are suitable for use in convection ovens. Handles become hot — always use oven gloves or kitchen cloths.
