Stainless steel wall shelves — optimal use of vertical space, compliance with hygiene requirements and durability in demanding kitchen conditions make wall shelves an indispensable element of professional kitchen equipment in HoReCa establishments.

Wall shelf construction and material

Wall shelves — professional HoReCa kitchen wall shelves are made from AISI 304 stainless steel, which ensures high resistance to corrosion and hygienic cleaning. AISI 304 steel is a chromium- and nickel-alloyed stainless steel with high corrosion resistance; suitable for food contact (food-safe); easy to clean with chemical cleaning agents and steam; meets HACCP requirements. Shelf depth — wall shelves are available in various depths (300, 350, 400 mm); shallow shelves (300 mm) are suitable for storing spices, dishes and tools; deeper shelves (400 mm) for larger dishes or food products. Shelf length — standard lengths available (600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500 mm or custom); choose length according to available wall space; longer shelves require additional wall reinforcements in the centre. Load capacity — a standard AISI 304 stainless steel wall shelf supports 40–150 kg depending on construction and mounting; check the manufacturer’s specifications; mounting quality on the wall side is equally important. BHS offers wall shelves across Europe.

HACCP and hygiene requirements

Wall shelves — HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) requirements in a professional kitchen set strict hygiene standards for all kitchen equipment, including wall shelves. Material requirements — stainless steel (AISI 304 or AISI 316) is recognised as a HACCP compliant material; the use of painted, powder-coated or galvanised materials that may peel is prohibited; a smooth steel surface does not create risks of bacterial accumulation. Construction without sharp edges — in professional wall shelves, edges are rounded or folded to prevent injury risk and facilitate cleaning; inner corners without sharp bends are important for hygienic cleaning. Cleaning suitability — the shelf must be washable with cold and hot water, steam cleaners and disinfectants approved for the food industry; stainless steel withstands these conditions without damage. Ventilation — the wall shelf must have a perforated or ribbed surface or an open frame to allow air to circulate freely and the surface to dry quickly after cleaning; standing water on the shelf creates a risk of bacterial growth.

Installation and mounting

Wall shelves — correct installation and mounting of wall shelves are important for safety and durability. Wall mountings — mount shelves to a load-bearing wall or to load-bearing elements (concrete, brick); plasterboard or lightweight partition walls are not suitable for heavy shelves; use screws and anchors of appropriate size; separate wall shelf mounting equipment (brackets) provides adjustable height. Height adjustment — most professional wall shelf systems allow height adjustment from the wall bracket; this allows the shelf height to be adapted to the needs of the work process and ergonomics. Load testing — after installation, test the shelf’s stability with a load; ensure that the mountings do not loosen under prolonged load; following the appropriate load specifications (LS) is mandatory for safe use; see double wall shelves.

HoReCa usage scenarios

Restaurant hot kitchen — wall shelves above the worktop for storing dishes and tools; AISI 304 shelves withstand heat and moisture exposure. Food production facility with HACCP certification — wall shelves for storing raw materials and semi-finished products; stainless steel meets auditor requirements. Large hotel kitchen — wall shelves for organising spices, dishes and accessories above the main worktop; wide wall coverage accommodates a shelf of length 1200–1500 mm; BHS provides the product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a wall shelf and a double wall shelf? Wall shelves — a wall shelf is a single surface mounted on the wall; a double wall shelf consists of two surfaces (upper and lower) on a single mounting system; the double shelf provides greater storage capacity in the same wall space; a single shelf solution is suitable for areas with limited wall height.

Is a stainless steel wall shelf suitable for wet (washable) areas? Wall shelves — yes, AISI 304 stainless steel is resistant to moisture and is suitable for washable areas; AISI 316 steel is recommended if exposure to aggressive cleaning agents is very intensive; see also easy-assembly tables.
